2008 campaign
This season’s survey was very successful despite the adversities suffered in the form of food poisoning and highly unstable weather. In the ploughed zone we continued according to the intensive systematic methodology developed last year. We surveyed six ploughed fields in the transect line mainly on the northern side of the lake covering a total of 6.4 km2 in 1873 units. On the slopes we surveyed 2.4 km2 including seventy-six kurgans. In addition we surveyed seven complete sites. The adapted methodology based on last year’s experiments worked very well. Independent projects within the survey included Peter Attema & Jan Delvigne classifying the landscape-types based on augering. Peter Attema & Sander Tiebackx continued the topographical survey of 2007, Vladimir Stolba excavated trial trenches, and Tatiana Smekalova with team and a team from Eastern Atlas did geomagnetic survey. |
