Profile

My home institution is the Department of Classical Archaeology, University of Aarhus, where I have been employed since 1993, and between 1994 and 2002 I have also directed the University Museum of Ancient Art.

My main fields of research interest are the meeting of cultures and the reception of Eastern, especially Hellenistic, culture in Italy; Hellenistic and late Republican material culture (architecture, pottery and sculpture); funerary culture from the Iron Age to the Hellenistic/late Republican period; Greek religion (Dionysos, Artemis/Diana, Asklepios), Archaeology of the Alban Hills, Italy.

I have been involved in various types of archaeological fieldwork, e.g. survey (Canadian Palaiopaphos Survey Project, Cyprus, directed by D.W. Rupp, 1983-1984, 1986; Larnaca district survey, Cyprus, directed by L. Wriedt Sørensen, 1990) and excavations (e.g. the Temple of Castor and Pollux, Rome, directed by J. Zahle and I. Nielsen, 1984-1986). I have directed the Nordic excavation of a Roman villa by Lake Nemi (1998-2002).

Since 2002 I have been full time engaged in Black Sea studies.

Black Sea research

I am particularly interested in ancient cult/religion as a particular arena for meeting of cultures and construction of identity. I have made a general study of 'temple' architecture of the Black Sea region and several studies of Artemis and Parthenos and the relationship between the two goddesses. My main focus is on Dionysos and his role in negotiating identities of the Greek settlers not just in the early period but also - and in particular - in the Hellenistic period. My ongoing work with the Mouldmade bowls, the so-called 'Megarian bowls' combines several of my interests. These pieces of mass-production fabricated in most of the Hellenistic cities are precious evidence for trade relation and traveller's networks. But they are also completely overlooked testimonies of Dionysian imagery of the late Hellenistic period.

I serve as project director together with Peter Attema of GIA.
