Research profile

I am a classical archaeologist (MA in 1996 and PhD in 2001).
Since January 2002 I have been employed at the Danish National Research Foundation's Centre for Black Sea Studies. Prior to my appointment, my research primarily concerned portrait statues of Hellenistic kings and Roman emperors. By drawing on all the available sources – archaeological remains, literary references, numismatics and not least the large body of epigraphic evidence – it has been possible to obtain knowledge about the function, distribution and chronology of portrait statues, about which traditional studies, dealing entirely with the preserved portraits, have had very vague or misconceived ideas.

Project description

My first research project was the study of the Kingdom of Pontos on the southeastern coast of the Black Sea. This part of the Black Sea, which has received relatively little scholarly attention, offers an interesting mixture of Greek, Iranian and Anatolian cultural elements. The aim of my project is to trace the material history of Pontos through the archaeological remains from the Greek colonization to the kingdom of the Mithridates and further into the Roman provincial system (research activity 4A).

Currently I'm working on the Bosporan Kingdom (research activity 7A).

In addition to my main research projects, I participate in the ongoing publication of the results of the excavation of Panskoe I in the Crimea (publication of the black-glazed pottery from building complex U7 (research activity 3A)), and I am responsible for the publication of the lamps from the excavation of The Lower City of Olbia (research activity 3B). Furthermore, I am working on the Gazetteer of Sites in the Black Sea Region accessible through the internet.
